Rare Ten-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Decoration, attributed to Joe "Jug" Johnson, Laurens, SC, late 19th or early 20th century, oversized, ovoid churn with semi-rounded rim, the shoulder with applied lug and semi-squared open handle. Surface covered in an olive-green-to-brown alkaline glaze, the shoulder inscribed with a freehand cobalt "10" above a cobalt stripe. The best example of Johnson's work that we have offered. Very nice condition with minor nicks to inner rim for lid, wear to ends of lug handles, some light surface wear to body, the handle with some in-the-firing separation to upper terminal and a short, glazed-over fissure to edge. H 22".
