Scarce Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to George U. Fletcher, Miles Mill, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1900, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, arched lug handles, and tall collar with flattened rim, the surface covered in a streaky, amber-colored alkaline glaze. Incised "4" at shoulder. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler at Southern Folk Pottery Collectors Society Auction, October 25, 2006, lot 301. Literature: A closely-related jar is illustrated in Baldwin, Great and Noble Jar, p. 110, fig. 4.18. A professionally-restored, approximately 3" x 3/4" wedge at rim. Professionally-restored handle chips. Sealed tight cracks to base area. Some exfoliation to interior base. Possible restoration to some exfoliation on underside. H 14 3/4".
