Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "M," probably Robert Mathis, Pottersville Pottery, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1830, rotund jar with semi-rounded rim and flattened lug handles, the surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze. Shoulder impressed "M," probably for Robert Mathis, below five impressed vertical slash marks. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler from J. Haynes, who found it in a Cocke County, TN barn. Proper left handle with a 1 1/2" flake and two minor nicks. A few minor nicks to proper right handle. Some in-the-firing fissures to underside, not visible on interior. H 13 1/2".
