Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Cake Crock with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, wide, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied tab handles, decorated with kaolin-slip drape motifs on the front and reverse and looping lines below each handle, all against a gray-green alkaline-glazed ground with bluish accents. Provenance: Ex-Howard Smith. Literature: Illustrated in Smith, Index of Southern Potters. Excellent condition with a small area of extremely minor chipping to base. H 7 1/4" ; Diam. 8 1/4".
