Rare Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "J.P. Bodie / make[r]," Jesse P. Bodie, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1870, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and arched tab handles, the surface covered in a mottled olive-colored alkaline glaze with rutile runs to the upper body. Incised at shoulder with the rare freehand signature, "J.P. Bodie / maker." Incised "4" on reverse. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler at Wooten and Wooten Auction, The Ferrell Collection, January 25, 2014, lot 29. A thin 5" crack from rim on front. Short horizontal in-the-firing lines to shoulder on front. A 2" horizontal in-the-firing line to shoulder on reverse. Minor wear to proper right handle. A minor base chip. Some water glass staining to surface, heavy on interior. H 14 1/4".
