Rare and Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher with Two-Color Slip Decoration, attributed to Phoenix Factory, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1840, highly-ovoid pitcher with footed base, narrow, flaring collar, and semi-squared rim, decorated with brushed iron slip and looping slip-trailed kaolin slip forming a drape motif around the body and at the spout. Exceptional form with outstanding decoration. In her notes, Wahler states the following about this pitcher: "Birthday present to myself lots of years ago. One of our best Edgefield pieces." Chipping to rim and spout. Light wear around midsection. A tiny base nick. H 8 1/4".
