Very Rare Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Face Harvest Jug, Southern U.S. origin, circa 1885, wheel-thrown, globular form on pedestal base with applied spout in rear and hand-modeled and applied clay face including circular eyes set within raised oval lids, deeply-carved eyebrows, backwards-facing ears, nose with carved nostrils, and open mouth with carved teeth. Base with dentile carving. Surface covered in a dark-brown Albany slip glaze with omission of the glaze in the eyebrows, whites of the eyes, and teeth. Excellent form with wonderful, stylized features. Exhibited: Heritage Plantation of Sandwich (Sandwich, MA), 1975. Provenance: Michael Hall; Herbert Hemphill; Tim Hill; New England Auctions, October 3, 2020, lot 163. Missing handle. Chips to proper left ear. Minor nicks to proper right ear. Chips to nose. Chipped area to spout. Very old black-colored filler around base. H 8".
