Rare Small-Sized Double-Handled Stoneware Presentation Jug with Incised Bird Motif, Inscribed "E. P. Gray," probably Julius Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1840, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder, semi-squared spout, and two applied, ribbed handles at the shoulder; decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-accented design of a crested bird in a grassy field pursuing a small insect. Reverse incised with the cobalt-highlighted name, "E.P. Gray," presumably the owner of the jug. This delicately decorated and inscribed work is exceptional in its form as jugs are typically made with two handles for larger-sized pieces of four gallons or more. Professional restoration to a 1 3/4" x 7/8" base flake on front and a small base chip on reverse. A Y-shaped crack to proper left handle, partially surface-level only, which appears to be in-the-firing. A surface line to top of proper right handle, not visible on underside of handle. H 8".
