Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAW'S / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK / N. YORK," Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base, finely-tooled neck, and semi-rounded mouth, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif resembling a clamshell. Impressed below with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Thomas Commeraw featuring rarely-seen five lines of stamping. While much of Commeraw's work bears partial stamping of his maker's mark, reading, for example, "COMMERAW'S / STONEWARE" or "CORLEARS / HOOK," this work exhibits all known stamps the potter used to identify his ware during this period. One of a small number of Commeraw pieces marked in this manner that we have offered. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Midwestern U.S. Excellent condition with some shallow chipping to base and some typical in-the-firing flaws for pieces of this age and origin. H 12 1/4".
