Exceptional Salt-Glazed Stoneware "Railroad and River Guide" Pig Flask, Signed and Dated "By Anna Pottery / 1883," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, 1883, molded flask in the form of a reclining pig with hole at rear, incised details to face and hooves, and anatomically-correct underside, incised on one side with the cobalt-highlighted inscription, "St. Louis the future Great in- / Latest and Only Reliable / Railroad and River Guide / By Anna Pottery / 1883." Remainder of pig incised with a cobalt-highlighted map of the Midwestern United States, including the following landmarks: Miss River, Chester, Grand Tower, Jonesboro, alton, o & m. R.R., Springfield, Bloomington, Cairo, Pullman, Champagne, mattoon, Efiingham, Odin, Centralia, Tamaroa, Duquoin, Carbondale, Anna, mounds, Cincinnati the Porkpacking City, and Chicago the Corn City. Alton, O & M .R.R., Springfield, Bloomington, Grand Tower, Jonesboro, Cairo, Odin, Tamaroa, Duquoin, Carbondale, Mounds, Vincens, Dubuque, Dunleith, Anna, Cincinnati the Pork City, and Chicago the Corn City. Surface covered in a clear salt glaze. Among the finer salt-glazed Anna pig flasks that we have offered, this example features elaborate penmanship in the distinctive Kirkpatrick style, attractive glazing and color, and strong condition. Excellent condition with only very minor in-the-firing flaws including two small in-the-making fissures to spout, a very faint 3/8" line in tail, two tiny in-the-firing pings to one side, and a small kiln scar to bottom of one front leg.
