Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Bank with Incised Bird and Floral Motifs and Molded Lion, Stamped "DONATION / FOR.THE.THIRD / INTEREST" and "MISS.EMMA.MURRAY.," Northeastern U.S. origin, mid 19th century, extravagantly-potted, cylindrical form on scallop-edged pedestal base with narrow collar above, surmounted by a flattened top with crimped rim. Body decorated on front with molded, impressed, and incised drapes flanking the inscription, "DONATION / FOR.THE.THIRD / INTEREST." Sides decorated with incised bird and floral motifs. Reverse decorated with a molded standing lion below the name, "MISS.EMMA.MURRAY." Collar embellished with pierced star and circle designs surrounding a molded star. Large coin slot to shoulder area, underscored by a series of impressed X's. Edges of bank feature chip carving, dentile incising, and impressed circles, and key tips. Cobalt highlights throughout as well as a brushed floral motif to base and swag design to body. This imaginative work, which employs a wide variety of decorative techniques, is among the most ambitiously-crafted stoneware banks that we have ever offered.
