Rare Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Slogan Crock, Inscribed "Better Suffer / Wrong then do / Wrong," Stamped "O.H. SEYMOUR / HARTFORD," CT origin, circa 1871-1874, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, featuring the slip-trailed cobalt inscription, "Better Suffer / Wrong then do / Wrong." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The quotation on this crock, related to the slip-script maxims found on Norwalk, Connecticut redware, is attributed to Greek philosopher, Socrates. These words were also used by Vermont Revolutionary War veteran, Samuel Harrison, in an 1812 letter to President James Madison, regarding impending war with Great Britain. Exfoliation around base area and underside. Light exfoliation to shoulder and rim. A 1 1/4" glazed-over iron ping to rim. A 1" in-the-firing iron ping near base on reverse. A chip to interior of rim.
