Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horse-and-Tree Motif, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Somerset, MA, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with two stenciled horses facing a slip-trailed design of a tree, all above a brushed ground. Cobalt highlight to capacity mark. An appealing use of stenciled, brushed, and slip-trailed decorative elements. A 7 1/2" spider line on underside, including two lines that extend a short distance onto base on front. Rim chips. A 1" line and minor chip along edge of proper right handle. Staining to surface. Minor exfoliation to base. H 13".
