Very Rare Altered Redware Jug Birdhouse, Stamped "J S," probably John Snavely, Hagerstown, MD or possibly Shepherdstown, WV, circa 1805-1820, highly-ovoid jug with footed base and narrow, tapered spout, the surface covered in a dark-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Underside impressed "J S." Jug was altered at some point to serve as a birdhouse with a carved hole and added leather strap for hanging. John Snavely was active in both Hagerstown and Shepherdstown between 1805 and 1820. His Hagerstown pottery was located on Beaver Creek and it is believed he sporadically worked at his Shepherdstown site. In 1813, Snavely, along with Henry Adam, Peter Bell, and Daniel Reichard, formed an association to regulate the prices of Hagerstown earthenware. He would eventually move to Ohio in the 1820s (Comstock, pp. 469-470). Lacking handle. A few minor base chips. Wear to spout. Includes leather strap for hanging. H 10".
