Rare Eight-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped 'HART BRO'S. & LAZIER / BELLEVILLE / ONT.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a leaf, accented with spots. Shoulder impressed with the maker's mark of brothers, Charles and Edwin Hart, and their sister, Alcena Lazier, who was married to potter, George Lazier. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent size and desirable decoration, featuring the stamp of a female pottery owner. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., Spring 2023, lot 246. A V-shaped crack in underside, part of which continues 13 1/2" up side of churn to the right of the bird. Some tiny surface flakes to shoulder on reverse. Shallow flakes to inner rim for lid. H 21 1/2".
