Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head and long, dash-accented tail, perched on a forked tree stump. Ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This lesser-seen style of Norton pheasant features a thinner-than-usual neck and is referred to as a "snake-necked" pheasant in Cesana and Leder's The Birds of Bennington. A fine example, exhibiting bold, enamel-like cobalt and superb color and contrast. Excellent condition with minor wear to cobalt, a tiny nick to spout, and some minor in-the-firing flaws, including some short, in-the-firing lines at base, which are glazed over, a small in-the-firing base chip on reverse, and a small flake to underside.
