Two Pierced Salt-Glazed Stoneware Leach Jugs, Northeastern U.S. origin, second half 19th century, one of ovoid form, unmarked, the other of semi-ovoid form, incised "18 / George McNeal." George McNeal worked at the Saterlee and Mory pottery in Fort Edward, NY. These jug were used to obtain lye from ashes for making soap. Provenance: Taller jug acquired at Crocker Farm, Inc., March 19, 2016, lot 140. Taller with an approximately 6" curved horizontal crack at base, which appears to be in-the-firing, a 4" vertical hairline at base, and shallow chipping to interior of spout. Shorter with a spout chip, two minor spout nicks, a short line in spout, a large base chip, and two minor lines in foot. H (of taller) 18 1/2".
