Cobalt-and-Manganese-Decorated Stoneware Mug with Sprig-Molded Decoration, Dated 1688, Westerwald, Germany origin, circa 1688, ovoid mug with tooled collar and footed base, featuring a molded and applied seal with bird piercing its breast to feed its chicks, another bird atop an urn, and the date, 1688. Seal is flanked by incised vines bearing molded and applied flowers. Cobalt and manganese highlights throughout. Missing handle. A small glazed-over flake to rim. A hairline across underside, continuing a very short distance onto base. H 7 5/8".
