Exceedingly Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horses Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE. / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with coved rim molding, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two striped horses with reins, facing each other atop a stylized ground with central, stalk-shaped plant and smaller vegetation. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few mammal designs by Whittemore are known, this work being among the most outstanding products from this pottery that we have ever offered. The depiction of two horses on the same vessel is noteworthy. A 5 3/4" crack from rim on front and some associated surface wear to front of rim. A thin 4 1/4" line descending from rim through proper left handle. Rim chips. Some fry to cobalt. Extremely minor surface wear to reverse. H 10 5/8".
