Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Wreath Decoration, Stamped "J.B. LEATHERS / MT. EAGLE, PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and pierced clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with a series of brushed swags forming a wreath within wreath, surrounding a still-smaller stylized wreath. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, clay tabs at shoulder, and terminals of handle at base. This work combines one of Central Pennsylvania's rarest and most desirable maker's marks with a scarce and highly-prized form. It is one of only three batter pails by this potter that we have seen. As with the other Leathers batter pails, the form is potted in an unusual style--more rectilinear than typical Central Pennsylvania and New York State batter pails and fashioned with a shorter spout. Rust residue to rim and spout. A 5 1/2" surface line on underside, continuing 1 3/4" up proper left side of pail, not visible on interior. A 6" surface line on underside, continuing 3" up reverse. Two very minor, glazed-over rim nicks. H 10 1/4".
