Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tree-of-Life Decoration, Signed "Henry Lowndes / Maker / Petersburg / Virginia / 1841," 1841, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with an elaborate slip-trailed Henry Lowndes signature and date below a looping line motif. Reverse decorated with a large brushed tree-of-life motif below a slip-trailed looping line. This example features a rarer variant of the potter's signature found on his larger vessels, which includes full spelling of Lowndes's first name and the word, "Virginia," as well as its date of manufacture. A 2 1/4" rim chip on reverse. A 2 3/4" loss to proper left handle. A tight spider crack on underside, including one tight line extending up right side of jar. Various other tight lines and crazing to jar. Rim slightly out-of-round. H 14 1/4".
