Fine Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA origin, circa 1970, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with hand-modeled and applied clay face with depressed front featuring orb-shaped kaolin eyes with black-slip pupils, pointed nose, two different ears, and slightly open mouth. Surface covered in a metallic brown alkaline glaze with darker green-to-blue runs. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. An earlier work by Meaders, indicated by the reductive modeling, lack of teeth, and style of glaze. Provenance: A recently-surfaced work, acquired by the consignor's parents at The Smithsonian Folklife Festival circa 1970. Excellent condition with a shallow chip to proper right ear some in-the-firing surface fissures. H 8 3/4".
