Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Tree, House, and Fence Motif, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed scene of a central tree flanked by a house and split-rail fence with various shrubs in the foreground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent color and large size to design. One of only a small number of Norton pieces featuring this particular motif. A large area of restoration to reverse below handle, extending onto partway onto proper left side, presumably covering exfoliation. Some unrestored exfoliation to underside. A minor spout chip. Light wear to cobalt. A minuscule nick to side of handle. H 16 1/2".
