Rare Three-Gallon Utica, NY Stoneware Advertising Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Jockey and Banner Motif, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a large stenciled design of a standing jockey with distinctive cap and spurred boots, holding a shield-shaped banner, inscribed "JOHN COYNE. / UTICA, / N.Y." Decorated with distinctive, bold cobalt slip found on this pottery's well-known bird and floral motifs, this jug is the first example of White family stoneware bearing this design that we have offered. Its rare figural motif is complemented by exceptionally large coverage of the image over the vessel's front. A 1 1/8" in-the-firing chip to top of spout. Two in-the-firing chips to underside. A horizontal crack in base of handle. An in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side of jug and reverse. Staining to surface. H 15 3/4".
