Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Birds Eating Grapes Motif, Stamped "L LEHMAN & CO. / WEST 12 ST. N Y," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an elaborate design of two birds feeding on an elaborate grapevine, one carrying a grape in its beak and another with downward feeding stance. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent figural decoration, imbued with a sense of vitality. Small flakes to front. A 3" Y-shaped line to proper right handle, emanating from a minor nick. A small base chip on reverse. H 15 1/4".
