×Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & CO. / FORT EDWARD, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump with ground cover at base. Unusually large size to design, possibly executed by itinerant decorator, John Hilfinger (1826-1888), known for his work at the Julius and Edward Norton pottery of Bennington, Vermont. A Y-shaped crack on underside, extending onto shoulder on front. A few flakes to shoulder on front. Minor chips to molding below rim. Chips and wear to inner rim for lid. A small chip to proper left handle. Minor surface wear below proper right handle. H 13".
