Scarce Eight-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Churn, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES . STAR / POTTERY," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid churn with flaring collar, tooled rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an undulating, flowering vine above "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY" maker's stenciling and a stenciled rose motif, flanked by stars. Freehand stripe decoration to collar. Base with freehand "8" flanked by dashes, underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Wear and rust residue from a metal band that once wrapped around the base. A 9" Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. A 6" vertical crack from rim on reverse. A thin, approximately 6" crack near midsection on reverse. Tight cracks throughout underside, one forming a tight 5 1/2" spider crack to base area on reverse, and few others extending a short distance onto base. A glazed-over iron ping to shoulder on reverse. A 3" Y-shaped line to shoulder on front. H 20 1/4".
