×Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A.N. BURCHFIELD. / 1430... ALLEGHENY.PA," third quarter 19th century, cylindrical jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with a horizontal floral motif with spotted leaves and blossom above a wavy stripe. Base with freehand "5" within a splayed stem. The first example bearing this stamp that we have offered. A 3 3/8" loss to rim on proper right side. A small in-the-firing contact mark to front. A minor in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. Chips to reverse end of proper left handle. Wear and an approximately 1 1/8" surface line to front end of proper left handle. A minor chip to proper right handle. Staining to surface. Two minor chips to bottom edge of rim. H 15 1/2".
