Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, James River Valley of Virginia origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with squared rim and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with an undulating, leafy stem bearing a large looping blossom. Freehand "4" at shoulder on front. Very nice condition. A shallow 2 1/4" flake to underside along bottom edge, partially visible at base. An in-the-firing stone ping near base. Some light surface wear and minor staining. H 15 1/4".
