Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Jug with Cobalt Smoking Face Decoration, Inscribed "F. WOOD.," Stamped "RIEDINGER & CAIRE / POUGHKEEPSIE NY," circa 1857-1878, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, brush-decorated with a profile of a man's face smoking a cigarette. Inscribed "F. WOOD." below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable subject matter with good folk art appeal. Provenance: Ex-Collection Steven B. Leder. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with only minor flaws: a minor in-the-firing contact mark on proper right side of jug, a 1 1/2" in-the-firing line to base, minor crazing to base, and some light staining. H 13 1/2".
