Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, mid 19th century, approximately one-and-a-half to two-gallon cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a spotted bird perched on a stylized foliate motif. Includes a Bristol-slip lid, not original to jar. An approximately 4 1/4" crack on underside, continuing 6" up reverse. A small rim chip. A minor in-the-firing ping to front and reverse. Staining to surface, primarily water glass. Lid with chips and a 1 3/4" surface line. H 10 1/2".
