Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Henry Harrison Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1855, ovoid jar with footed base, flared collar, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with three vertical floral motifs on the front and reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a line of cobalt beneath each handle. Unusual decoration for this maker. A chip to proper left handle. A minor nick to proper right handle. Two hairlines from rim, measuring 1 1/2" and 1 1/4". Small rim chips. A few tight cracks in underside, one forming a thin, approximately 5" x 5" Y-shaped crack at base, another forming a thin 4" crack at base. Some minor staining. H 13 7/8".
