Unique Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Rendering of Independence Hall on Underside, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1860-1876, ovoid jar with tall collar and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated on the underside with a rendering of Philadelphia's Independence Hall with American flag and the building's distinctive cupola with arrow weathervane. Remainder of jar decorated with foliate motifs around the shoulder, cobalt highlights to the handle terminals, and a scalloped line of cobalt below each handle. To our knowledge, this jar is the only example of American stoneware known with a depiction of Independence Hall, one of America's most historic buildings, where both the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and adopted. The Liberty Bell was displayed here from 1850 until 1976. The overall style of the jar dates it to the 1860s or 1870s, with it possibly being made during the Centennial. Recently discovered in the Northeastern U.S., this work is among the most historically significant examples of Philadelphia-made pottery known. A 1 1/2" flake to end of one handle and a 1 1/8" flake to opposite end of same handle. Rim chips. H 13 3/4".
