Scarce Lidded Redware Sugar Bowl with Bird Finial, attributed to Anthony Bacher, Adams County, PA, circa 1855, ovoid bowl with footed base, open loop handles and scored molding to shoulder. Original lid fashioned with a long-necked bird with turned head and incised legs. Surfaces of bowl and lid covered in a dark-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. The long neck and turned-head attitude of the bird is most unusual among known Bacher sugar bowls. Bowl in very nice condition with a chip and some minor nicks to rim of bowl, two small unglazed spots to side, and minor base wear. Lid with a 7/8" chip to flange on underside of lid, a small rim chip, a typical chip to tip of bird's beak, and some old, light exfoliation to top of lid. A small, old catalog sticker on the jar and lid. H (excluding lid) 4 1/4"; H (including lid) 7 1/4".
