Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / Strasburg Va," circa 1845, ovoid jar with tall collar and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a series of graduated vertical slashes, a predecessor to the popular Strasburg "Indian necklace" motif. Impressed under one handle with rare, earlier Solomon Bell two-line maker's mark below a two-gallon capacity mark. Bold decoration and exceptional color. Provenance: From a forty-five-year VA collection. A 1 1/4" flake to one handle. A smooth, in-the-making 1 7/8" flake to opposing handle, which is glazed over. A small rim chip and a few minor rim nicks. An in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder. Blue paint added to enhance the maker's and capacity marks. H 11".
