Very Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "W.M. / 1833," William Miller, Strasburg, VA, 1833, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim, tooled shoulder, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a distinctive Miller pottery motif consisting of conjoined upswept and downward-arching swags with flower above and below. Downward-arching trails of slip-trailed spots emanating from the juncture of the swags. Base decorated completely around with floral devices. Cobalt highlights to tops of handles. Slip-trailed below one handle with the initials, "W.M.," for potter, William Miller, and below the opposing handle with the date, "1833." Relatively few inscribed Miller pottery pieces from Strasburg are known, this example featuring elaborate decoration, an appealing one gallon size, and superb color. Very nice condition with shallow chips to handles, a minor base chip, and tiny in-the-firing base chip. H 10".
