One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Samuel Irvine Pottery, Newville, PA, circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tooled rim molding, decorated with a slip-trailed undulating vine bearing six brushed flower blossoms. Swag decoration to collar. Dash and swag decoration to collar and brushed cobalt dash to spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Decoration is applied over slip-coated clay. The decoration is styled after pieces from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, although the capacity mark is distinctive to the Samuel Irvine pottery of Newville. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., April 8, 2022, lot 243. A few chips to side of rim. A shallow in-the-firing flake where spout meets rim. Faint lines in underside, including a very faint line (barely visible on exterior) extending 6" up side of pitcher. Two in-the-firing contact marks to left side of pitcher. H 12".
