Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, brush-decorated with a bold design of a swan with solid-cobalt wing, swimming on stylized water. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Desirable decoration and size to jar, featuring excellent color and contrast. Base with sealed break around circumference of base including some small spots of filler along break. A faint 1 1/4" line ascending from this damage on front. Some light fry to cobalt. H 8".
