Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Leaping Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1880, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed design of a deer with large rack, leaping from a stylized ground with tree. Excellent detail to deer's body including spotted and striped embellishments. Slip-trailed "6" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A prized Burger family motif, exhibiting bold application to the cobalt and excellent color and contrast. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in California. A spider crack to midsection on front. A small rim chip on front. An 11" crack descending from shoulder to base on reverse. Stabilized exfoliation to reverse and very minor exfoliation to front/side of churn. Shallow chips and wear to inner rim for lid. H 19 1/4".
