Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a cluster of eight hollow-centered grapes hanging from a leafy vine with two looping tendrils. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Includes original lid, marked with the same three-gallon capacity mark as the jar. Featuring excellent color, this work is decorated with a rare and desirable Cowden & Wilcox grapes motif variant, executed with a slip cup and lacking the typical cobalt-filled center to the fruit. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a small chip to interior of rim along with some tiny chips and wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with a 1 3/4" flake, a 7/8" in-the-firing flake, and two 1/2" surface lines from edge. H (including lid) 14".
