One-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO: / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes molded lid with Albany slip glaze, Northeastern U.S. origin. A thin 4" crack from rim on front. A thin diagonal crack descending from rim through handle on left side of crock, extending approximately 4 1/2" from rim. A thin, approximately 3 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Minor rim chips. A shallow flake to proper left handle. A minor, glazed-over dent to base. Some minor staining. Lid with a few edge chips, chipping around flange on underside, and two chips and wear to knob. H (excluding lid) 7 5/8".
