Rare Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "HARRISBURG.PA," attributed to John Young, Harrisburg, PA, circa 1856-1858, ovoid pitcher with short, flaring collar and tapered rim molding, decorated with a brushed design of a large flowering tulip plant bearing three blossoms with drooping stamens. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. The maker's mark, "HARRISBURG.PA," has been found on pieces produced at Harrisburg's Filbert Street Pottery by either John Young & Co. ( the "& Co." referring to Young's partnership with Shem Thomas) or William Moyer. However, the early-style form of this pitcher and its decoration lead to a firm attribution to John Young & Company. Few pitchers bearing this stamp are known and this example is potted in an unusual five-quart capacity. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., Fall 2022 Auction, lot 84. Two chips and a minor nick to top of rim. Three chips to bottom edge of rim molding. 3 3/4" hairline from rim on side of pitcher. H 11 1/2".
