Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Triple-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, profusely-decorated with a large brushed wreath with central flourish surrounding a smaller wreath flanking the base of the spout. Reverse decorated with a third wreath central flourish. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, handle terminals, and pierced clay tabs. Includes tin lid and spout cover. Featuring extravagant decoration and exceptionally strong color, this batter pail is among the finer examples of the form that we have offered in recent years. Chipping around spout. Two rim chips. A 2" hairline from rim on reverse. Typical light wear to pierced clay tabs. A minor base nick. Some minor spots of fry to cobalt. Other very minor wear. H 8 1/2".
