Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "WILLSON'S & YOUNG / HARRISBURG PA," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with upswept foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. One of only a few examples of stoneware bearing this short-lived Harrisburg mark that we have ever offered. A restored 2" x 7/8" wedge at rim on proper right side of jar, including an unrestored 5 1/2" line descending from it. A 1 1/4" hairline above proper left handle. A very minor, glazed-over nick to proper left handle. Small chips to inner rim for lid. A minor in-the-firing ping below maker's mark. A few short, minor surface lines at base of jar, not visible on interior. A shallow 1" chip along bottom edge on front. A few typical, minor in-the-firing chips to underside. Some staining to shoulder area. H 10".
