Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Bird Decorations, Dated 1838, attributed to Nathan Clark, Sr. and Ethan S. Fox, Athens, NY, 1838, keg-form cooler with tooled banding and square bunghole, decorated with a bird-0n-branch and bird-on-nest flanking the date, 1838. Additional floral decoration around midsection. Cobalt floral motif to bunghole. The style of the bird decoration, date, and color of the cooler lead to a firm attribution to potters, Nathan Clark, Sr. and Ethan S. Fox of Athens, New York. Small rim chips. Some fry to cobalt. A crack across underside, forming a 4 1/4" inverted Y on reverse base. Staining to surface. H 12 3/4".
