×Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Decoration, Inscribed "M.E.," New York State origin, probably Utica, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, vertical rim, and thick lug handles, decorated on one side with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate cartouche surrounding the initials, "M.E." Further decorated below with incised and cobalt-highlighted floral motifs. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Rim chips. A 1" hairline to rim on front. Some staining. An in-the-firing, glazed-over iron ping at base on reverse. H 11 1/2".
