Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Wreath Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a scalloped wreath surrounding the maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr., emanating from a tripartite foliate device. Cobalt accents to makers and handle terminals. Among the better Crolius jugs that we have offered, featuring the potter's large-sized, early-period maker's mark and classic incised decoration. Provenance: From a prominent Mid-Atlantic collection; Ex-Warren Hartmann. Base chips, including a shallow 1 1/2" flake to underside along bottom edge, partially visible when jug is standing up. A thin 3" crack ascending base on front. Various in-the-firing flaws to surface, typical of pieces of this age and origin, including a large contact mark on reverse. H 14 1/2".
