Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed pheasants, one with tucked head, the other with craning neck, perched on a forked tree stump. Ground cover below. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. This jar features one of the Nortons' most prized designs that was produced with any regularity. Typically found on jugs, this motif is rare for this form. The decoration features superb color and contrast, enamel-like cobalt, and excellent coverage over the vessel's front, measuring 11" x 8 3/4". Broken sections to base and underside, reglued on interior. Some flakes to base area. A large, tight Y-shaped crack on reverse. A small chip to proper left handle. A minor spot of wear to proper right handle and minor flake below. Two small flake to proper left side of jar. A few small chips to interior of rim. Chipping and wear around inner rim for lid. H 14 1/2".
