Exceptional Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Vine Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and thin, flattened rim, decorated completely around the shoulder with an incised, undulating vine with scrolled leaves. The primary stem of the vine is formed from a two-pronged stylus and the leaves feature incised combing. An exquisite example of 18th century Manhattan stoneware, closely-related to a copper-and-cobalt-decorated jar in the collection of Yale University. Excellent condition with a 5/8" rim chip and some chipping to base, some of which is glazed over. H 9 1/2".
