Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an extravagant slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and spotted body, standing on a heavily-shrubbed ground flanked by two split-rail fences and a tree stump on hills behind it. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity. An iconic American stoneware motif with unusually large coverage over the jar's front, the design spanning an impressive 10 1/2" tall by 13 1/4" around the curve of the vessel. Provenance: Christie's, New York, NY. Very nice condition. A shallow 7/8" chip to proper left handle. Inner rim for lid with wear and a few minor chips. Two minor in-the-firing pings to front. Water glass staining to interior and some light staining to exterior. H 13 1/4".
